Now, this guy here - moviebob - he's got a good head on his shoulders. He's smart, he's eloquent, and he's a geek. But not just any geek - primarily, he's a video gamer, and above that, a NINTENDO fan. Logically, I'm drawn to Bob like a moth to a fire. So are all of you. So... clickie clickie! I'll post whenever he makes a new one and start a discussion.
Speaking of which, the latest installment is Game Overthinker v19 - A Third Way? Watch it! WATCH IT!
And now, discuss!
Personally I think he raises some good points. As he discussed in an earlier video, unless it gets fresh blood, the current gaming world is going to go the way of the Sega Bird, and, well, casual gamers is the way to go. And this new patent... yeah, it seems stupid, but the way it's presented, I think I could get behind it. Let the nubbies watch the show, and let the real gamers plow right through. If they could adjust the difficulty, though...
...and THAT leads me to the other thing he made me think of. One of my biggest qualms with recent Zeldas and such is how easy they are... but, well, like he said, that's not their fault, that's mine. I know how to play Zelda. I've been played Zelda for over a decade. Considering how much they stick to a formula - a formula I love more than anything else - it's a given that I'll know exactly what to do and when to do it, so the game will seem easy. Definitely had me checking myself. MAJOR culture shock.
So... any other thoughts? I think we could get some lively debate out of these.
2. Level grinding, though rewarding, should be kept less. Imagine how boring it can get fighting the same enemies over and over and over again just to get to n levels above a boss's level so you can beat him? That kind of gameplay's not for me. I'd fall asleep right away. If I'm level grinding, it has to be kept short. Take Pokemon for example. EVing them takes quite a minimal effort if you know what you're doing. You don't have to spend ages staring at the screen boring your pants off. This was the exact reason I quit MapleStory.
3. That casual gamer bit intrigues me. We're all split into 2 different gaming worlds now that the Wii's a big hit. The hardcore curse the casual for existing because they apparently 'dumb down' the quality of games, while the casual don't understand the hardcore group and their complex ****. The hate is everywhere, it's like two religions fighting for supremacy. I agreed with what he said about the 'gaming experience' thing. When you've been playing a long time, most things seem simple because you know what to do. Unlike johnny, I wasn't shocked cause I'm always on the fence between hardcore and mainstream, I play all sorts and don't usually complain about difficulty. As long as the game is there, I'll play it. This part of the video made a lot, a lot of sense.
4. This is a good video. Many, many good points being made here. I wish I could talk like that and express my feelings so completely. It's a bit difficult for me.
5. Did I mention I hate Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia?
I enjoy this one. Lots of good points (wash the paint off, Ninty, and you may as well call it Ocarina of Wolves), nothing I would argue with, so on, so forth. Next episode looks good, though. Nintendo gobbling up Sega (at least making them 2nd Party or something) is the only natural conclusion to their current state.
Hoo, now I'm beginning to like this series. 1. You support one console over the rest, but IMO, that isn't fanboyism yet. That's called being a regular fan. Only when you support one console AND try to downplay or bash or hate the others then are you a fanboy.
2. I've not played Mario 64(except maybe on DS).
3. Agreed with the Gamecube games being highly original. Maybe when Nintendo's fortunes are up against the wall then they start churning out the quality. And Wind Waker is better than Twilight Princess....but it's hard to shun Galaxy for Sunshine.
4. lol Seal of Quality. So shiny and pretty...Oh yeah, shovelware. Gotta hate them. Nintendo giving them the green light is what's causing so much agony among most of us. Still, sift through the garbage and you'll find one or two good ones occasionally. Try Opoona and Trauma Center: New Blood. Or Dokapon Kingdom.
What really pains me is when people don't even consider the Wii a real console because of all the shovelware and crappy stuff. Thinking it sucks and the 360/PS3 is much better? Sure, go ahead. To an extent, I'd probably agree with you. But a lot of gamers - and the public at large - seems to think it's just a child's toy. Which, to an extent, it is, as are all consoles... but it can and does compete in the big leagues. However, the majority of people don't understand that Wii games are video games, just like Halo or Resistance or Fable. Hell, a lot of people I know don't even understand there's games other than Wii Sports.
I think they could pull of a Smash Bros. DS if they really wanted to. It'd be a big departure from the console ones, but it's not as if it's an impossibility... hell, make it an RPG spin-off or something. That'd probably sell.
