British English vs American English

Colour or color?

Neighbour or neighbor?

It's not a racist poll or anything, just a preference.

I mix and match. Like, I'll write "theatre" instead of "theater," but "color" instead of "colour." I'm also a big fan of British slang... I mean, come on, there is no better insult than "wanker."

In speech, though, I have a slight Scottish accent, which is odd, because my family has long roots in the USA.

Aye? I like some British spellings, like grey, but oftentimes the US versions seem more natural... Because I'm american.

P.S. If "Faerie" is British and not just archaic, British wins hands down.

I thought American/Canadian English were identical? The only difference is in accent.

Very very similar, but not identical per se. There's the whole Canadian... Uh, how do you write it? Well, "Eh" as Toadster puts it, I think it'd be more like "aye". He's the Canadian one though.

I can't think of any other differences.

I propose we speak the Queen's English. It is deemed the most proper.

What we really need is the old meaning of the word awesome...

I'd like to know when that word was invented.

–adjective
1. inspiring awe: an awesome sight.
2. showing or characterized by awe.
3. Slang. very impressive: That new white convertible is totally awesome.
Origin:
1590–1600; awe + -some

Lol, I even got the year which it was invented. Definitely not 25 BC :P

We need to ditch defenition 3 and promote defenition 1. Otherwise when an astronaut says outer space is awesome everyone will think he's talking about the new white convertible.

Conversely, if a person says a new white convertible is awesome, everyone will think he's talking about outer space :P

The old meaning of awesome is basically a fancy "amazing". The new one is a fancy "cool".

I see very little downside in what you've suggested. Give us the old meaning!

awe + some implying some things are meant to make you stare in awe.

Exactly. The current "awesome" just means the same thing as "cool"... It's not right!
