Realism wasn't bad initially, but it became so overused. I imagine being able to use an AK47 - a REAL GUN - in a video game was a great feeling at one point. Now? Not so much.
Too many games want to be real, and it's getting stale. Where's the creativity? I think lazy developers can get away for not having any fresh ideas with this 'realism' thing.
Exactly. It's the influx of "hardcore" gamers that did it, though, like Overthinker said. They're the same people that make Michael Bay movies successful.
'Hardcore' in the sense that only mature, adult themed games are always considered better than a game with colorful graphics and innovative, fresh ideas.

Sooner or later when people finally realize that this realistic thing is getting boring beyond control, the gaming world will evolve again...Nintendo is spearheading this transformation with its casual gaming, fantasy themed, innovative games that aren't bound and shackled by the restrictions of reality...
